bridging distances across mountains and seas, building a bridge of friendship, and pursuing a path of mutual benefit. to implement china's "belt and road" initiative and advance the "golden indonesia 2045 vision" strategy, and to deepen sino-indonesian technological and cultural exchange and cooperation, on june 15, 2024, h.e. budi gunadi sadikin, minister of health of indonesia and chairman of the board of trustees of bandung institute of technology, led a delegation to visit csu for an exchange. during the visit, the indonesian ministry of health, gem, and csu signed a "memorandum of understanding on capacity building cooperation in the fields of biotechnology and medicine," advancing sino-indonesian cooperation in the field of life and medical sciences, creating a new model of collaboration, and promoting mutual understanding between the peoples of china and indonesia. professor yi hong, party secretary of csu, vice presidents professor guo xueyi and professor chen lizhang, and professor xu kaihua, board chairman of gem, attended the signing ceremony. professor li jiancheng, academician of the chinese academy of engineering and president of csu, met with minister budi and his delegation, engaging in in-depth discussions on advancing talent cultivation in the field of life and medical sciences. ms. wang min, joint actual controller and board director of gem, was also invited to participate in the exchange activities.

based on the consensus reached by the three parties, gem will expand its existing tripartite master's program in materials science and metallurgical engineering with the indonesian ministry of maritime and investment affairs and csu. additionally, gem will collaborate with the indonesian ministry of health and csu to establish new projects in the medical field. these projects will sponsor selected indonesian students to study bioinformatics, pathology, and pathophysiology at csu.

at the signing ceremony, secretary yi hong noted that the cooperation between csu and indonesia has been highly effective over the years, particularly with the support of gem. the two parties have engaged in deep and broad exchanges and cooperation in areas such as international talent cultivation and technological innovation. the signing of this memorandum of understanding will further deepen the existing cooperation among all parties, and he looks forward to exploring more mutually beneficial collaborations in the fields of biotechnology and medicine.

at the signing ceremony, minister budi expressed that indonesia looks forward to taking this memorandum as an opportunity to work with csu and gem to explore and implement a series of cooperative plans in areas including education and health. he emphasized the importance of strengthening exchanges in medical education and biomedical technology, contributing to the health and well-being of humanity through joint efforts between china and indonesia. additionally, as chairman of the board of trustees of bandung institute of technology, minister budi highlighted that the construction experience of csu is a valuable reference for bandung institute of technology. he hopes to enhance cooperation between csu and itb in metallurgy engineering, medical education, and rail transportation through student cultivation, faculty exchanges, and joint research projects.

at the signing ceremony, chairman xu kaihua stated that in the past five years, gem has established a world-leading high-tech nickel resource industrial park in indonesia. gem has collaborated with the indonesian government and csu to launch an international master’s program in materials science and metallurgical engineering. additionally, gem has signed an agreement with csu and itb to establish the first sino-indonesian international joint laboratory. these efforts have successfully created a "technology culture" flexible power model for overseas expansion, recognized by both china and indonesia."confucius had 3,000 disciples in ancient china, and today csu and gem aim to have 1,000 high-level talent disciples in indonesia," chairman xu kaihua stated. he expressed hope to complete the training program for 1,000 engineering masters within six years. the signing of the agreement between gem, the indonesian ministry of health, and csu for talent cultivation in the life and medical sciences will accelerate the realization of this dream, elevating the "technology culture" flexible power model for overseas expansion to new heights.

during the visit, minister budi toured the xiangya school of medicine, xiangya hospital, the school of metallurgy and environment, and the national engineering research center for heavy metal pollution control at csu. he experienced the profound historical legacy and advanced metallurgical and medical technologies of csu. minister budi also visited the classroom of the third batch of the "gem-cmmai-csu jointly master's program in metallurgical technology and new energy materials engineering." there, he gained insights into the learning progress of 28 international students. minister budi delivered a heartfelt impromptu speech, sharing his past academic and professional experiences. he underscored the significance of advancing metallurgical technology and downstream industrial chains for indonesia's "golden indonesia 2045 vision" strategy. he encouraged indonesian students to excel in metallurgical technology, emphasizing their role in contributing to indonesia's development through the high-quality extraction of mineral resources."we are very happy studying and living here!" santa laetitia, a representative of international students, reported to minister budi about her studying experience in china. she expressed profound gratitude to the indonesian government, gem, and csu for providing her with a valuable opportunity to pursue a master's degree in metallurgical engineering in china.

since 2019, gem has collaborated with the indonesian government and csu to launch the sino-indonesian joint master's program in materials science and metallurgical engineering under an international government-industry-academia research model. this program aims to explore a fast-track training program for advanced engineers, addressing the urgent demand for engineering and technical talent in indonesia's mining and metallurgical engineering, as well as new energy development sectors. in december 2023, professor yi hong, party secretary of csu, led a delegation to indonesia to promote the expansion of the sino-indonesian joint master's program into disciplines such as biomedicine, rail transportation, and international trade. this initiative marks the beginning of a new model for comprehensive cooperation in science, technology, culture, and education between csu and the indonesian government. minister budi and his delegation's visit to csu further deepened exchanges in science, technology, culture, medical care, and talent development between the indonesian government, chinese universities, and chinese enterprises. this comprehensive effort aims to serve indonesia's economic and social development, demonstrate and lead sino-indonesian cooperation, and elevate sino-indonesian scientific and cultural exchanges to a new stage with broader scope and higher standards.

during the visit, gem, the csu alumni association, and the csu alumni entrepreneurs association jointly organized a meeting between the indonesian ministry of health and chinese entrepreneurs in the life and medical industry. minister budi engaged in discussions with representatives from over 20 companies including mindray medical, bgi , united imaging healthcare , sinocare, hybio pharmaceutical,  sansure biotech , neusoft medical systems, cofoe medical technology, ave science & technology, apt medical, hunan cancer hospital, and zhongnan science and technology innovation industry incubation (shenzhen).

at the exchange meeting, secretary yi hong expressed his feelings with the key words "gratitude" and "moved" regarding this exchange activity. he first expressed gratitude to minister budi for his strong support for the cooperation projects in the life sciences and medical fields. he also thanked chairman xu kaihua, an outstanding alumnus of csu, for his care and support for their alma mater. from planning and execution to financial support, chairman xu kaihua made tremendous efforts and provided crucial support for the smooth progress of the projects. secretary yi hong also extended his gratitude to numerous outstanding alumni entrepreneurs from csu for their tremendous support in implementing the projects. at the same time, he felt very honored that csu could participate in the joint talent training program between china and indonesia, contributing to the friendship between china and indonesia. he expressed that csu would spare no effort to execute the cooperative projects well and to train indonesian students effectively, thereby making contributions to the friendship between the two countries.

during the exchange meeting, minister budi delivered a keynote speech titled "transformation and upgrading of indonesia's healthcare industry." he emphasized that driving indonesia's economic and social development while maintaining long-term prosperity relies crucially on human resources, specifically the health and diligence of the indonesian people. therefore, he highlighted the enormous potential in indonesia's healthcare market in the future. referring to a classic chinese text guanzi: quan xiu, he quoted, "for a year's plan, plant rice; for a decade's plan, plant trees; for a lifetime plan, educate people." this timeless wisdom underscored his invitation to chinese entrepreneurs in the life healthcare sector to seize the opportunity, take immediate action, be proactive, and invest in indonesia.

during the exchange meeting, representatives from chinese life healthcare companies such as mindray medical, bgi, united imaging healthcare, and sinocare biotech introduced their achievements in their respective fields and outlined their cooperation and strategies in indonesia's life healthcare sector. they expressed their readiness to provide medical services in indonesia, aiming to promote the transformation and upgrading of indonesia's healthcare system and provide greater support for the health of more people.

during the exchange meeting, chairman xu kaihua expressed gratitude in three aspects. firstly, he thanked minister budi for his visit, which symbolizes enduring friendship that spans oceans and mountains. secondly, he appreciated the support of csu in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among its alumni. thirdly, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to invest in indonesia during this era of "going global." chairman xu kaihua emphasized that he considers three decisions in his life to be pivotal: first, studying at csu 40 years ago; second, specializing in metallurgy; and third, venturing into investment and development in indonesia. he affirmed that through practical experience, gem has demonstrated that indonesia is one of the best countries for overseas investment.

at the exchange meeting, indonesian students and representatives jointly presented a splendid cultural performance. elegant indonesian traditional dances, melodious chinese songs, captivating chinese traditional operas, as well as ensemble performances of traditional chinese folk music and ethnic songs fully displayed the unique charm and deep integration of the cultures of china and indonesia, elevating sino-indonesian exchanges and integration to a climax.
